Ahh road trips. Just you, the road and your car, free to move about as you wish. Here are our favorite road-trip movies from around the world:

1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (India;2011)

This intelligent, funny and heart-warming film celebrates Spain, friendship and life. The premise is simple, in lieu of a bachelor party, the groom-to-be and his 2 best friends take a road trip across Spain that helps them iron out their differences and teaches each to seize the day and live the life they truly want. Do not miss this one.

2. Y Tu Mamá También (Mexico; 2001)

This quintessential teen-buddy-road-trip film also falls into another genre: the coming-of-age saga. Two teen boys convince a heartbroken woman to accompany them on a road trip, learning about themselves and each other along the way. This film boasts 34 major awards and 27 nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for writing-best original screenplay.

3. Central Station (Brazil; 1998)

A boy in search of his father goes on a trip from Rio de Janeiro to across Brazil in this film from director Walter Salles which won Best Picture at the Berlin Film Festival. Fernanda Montenegro won an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of an embittered older woman who leads the boy on his journey:

4. In This World (UK; 2003)

With a documentary feel and a dramatic overtone, this 2003 film from director Michael Winterbottom follows the journey of two young refugees who travel from Pakistan to London. It won the BAFTA film award in 2004:

5. Monsieur Ibrahim – (France; 2003)

This film won numerous awards and several Golden Globes for its lovely portrayal of an amazing friendship. A young Jewish boy and a Muslim man embark on a road trip to Turkey; a trip which changes both of them forever:

6. Bread and Tulips – (Italy; 2000)

This is a must-see for anyone who has fantasized about running away from it all and starting a new life. In this feel-good comedy from director Silvio Soldini, a woman gets forgotten by her own family at a rest stop and decides to turn her misfortune into an adventure:

7. The Motorcycle Diaries (Argentina; 2004)

Before Che Guevara became a major revolutionary, he was like any other 20-something in search of adventure, and in 1952 he and his best friend traveled 5,000 miles by motorcycle to Peru. This film follows their journey:

8. Amelie – (France; 2001)

Even though the traveling subject in this film just so happens to be a yard gnome, this stunningly charming movie brings every element of the road trip genre to life; exploration, change, even redemption.
