Giving Of Your Time And Talents - via Wikipedia

Volunteering to help those less fortunate can be an enriching and rewarding experience. Any time you give of yourself to others, you often find that the person receiving the most valuable benefit is you. The satisfaction of helping others is truly its own reward but you can also travel and experience other cultures while using your time and skills to volunteer on a service trip abroad.

There are many non-profit organizations that have the need for volunteers in all corners of the world. Many of these groups are willing to pay for room and board, even travel expenses, to those who are able to donate their time and talents to their cause. Some need specific professions such as medical or dental, but many just need helping hands in various capacities. This can be a phenomenal opportunity to travel and see the world while helping many in need.

Service Trip Ideas

Participating in a service trip is an adventure into another world and is worth the time and effort if you have the flexibility in your life to accommodate such a trip. The first step is deciding what you want to volunteer to do and where you want to do it. There are many options so narrowing it down is helpful.

Choose a cause.

If you have a cause close to your heart, there may be opportunities to help that cause in a service trip. For example, if you have a love for sea turtles, there are organizations that accept volunteers all over the world to help protect and preserve these creatures. Or you could choose to help refugees fleeing from their country or helping feed or give medical attention in impoverished countries.

Choose a destination.

You can plan a trip around visiting a certain country or continent. If you have anyways wanted to learn more about the Asian cultures or countries, planning a service trip is a way to interact with the culture first hand and do some good at the same time.

Use a talent or skill.

If you have a unique ability such as medical training, multi-lingual translation, or other marketable skills, this can be an opportunity to use them abroad in a volunteer capacity. Many skills are sought after and needed, which is a great way to determine where you should donate your time

Preparing For Your Trip

Once you have a destination in mind, you will want to prepare for any culture and environmental differences. This can be as simple as updating your wardrobe to accommodate the weather or culture, or as demanding as learning a new language and customs.

Learn the language.

If you are traveling to an area with a different native language, consider at least learning the basics before you go. It does not take as much time as you may think to learn. Understanding the language will make you more valuable and enhance the experience you have with the local culture.

Know your new environment.

Before going to a new country, educate yourself on cultural differences and what is acceptable behavior and dress. Any reputable organization will give you a briefing on what to expect but take it upon yourself to do your own research of what is suitable for interacting with the native culture. This may include specific cultural differences regarding gender and religious beliefs.

Having the opportunity to travel and spend time in another region in the world while benefiting a cause is an experience you will keep with you for a lifetime. Not everyone is able or willing to sacrifice their time on such a quest, but for those who do, there are such rewards!  Volunteers can leave with a better understanding of the world we live in and an appreciation for other cultures and languages, and the satisfaction of giving of themselves for others, the greatest gift of all.
