How to Secure a Unique Lodging Experience

A hotel room may be the place where you’ll spend the least amount of time when you’re traveling overseas, but it’s still an important factor in your trip planning. Aside from airfare, lodging will make up the largest part of your travel budget. You’ll also be reliant on your hotel to make you feel safe, and help you get well-rested for the day ahead of you.

But let’s say that you’re tired of your typical hotel choices, and you’re willing to branch out and try something new. Follow these tips for your pathway to a unique lodging experience when traveling overseas.

Read online forums and ask questions. Nobody knows the area you’re traveling to better than those who have lived there, and those who have traveled there before. Don’t rely solely on tour books, hotel websites, and tour-group company recommendations when you are deciding where to stay. Seek out online forums that are focused around your destination. Ask questions about the best and unique places to stay where you are traveling, and questions about things to look out for when you are traveling. Build on the knowledge that people around the world have about your destination. You’ll thank them for it later.

Go off the beaten path. Yes, staying in the middle of a city can be more convenient, but you’ll have a wider range of options if you’re staying outside the city and go into the city for your activities and sight-seeing adventures. Staying out in villages and even suburbs will give you the opportunity to see an area as the natives see it, and not like a typical tourist who has to be in the center of town and all of the tourism action.

Look for bed and breakfasts or smaller hotels over larger chains and chains that you’d find in the United States. These locations will often give you personal attention and provide a level of service that you won’t get at a larger hotel. Many times, these operators also will know more about the area in which you are traveling. They live in that community, and they’ll be able to tell you about the little hideaway locations and places that you should make time to see.

Look for niche and boutique hotels. Boutique and niche hotels are hotels that either cater to a particular audience, or are designed around a certain theme. You often can find these hotels by doing a Google or Bing search for “boutique hotels” and the city that you are visiting. Although these hotels can be more expensive than a chain or a bed and breakfast, you’ll get an experience unlike no other.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. When you’re traveling to a new country for the first time, it can be easy to pick a Holiday Inn or a Days Inn, or any chain that you’ve heard of in the United States. Although you may know what type of hotel to expect, are you really experiencing anything new? These hotels generally are standardized from one location to another, with very little variety in different hotels. Instead of picking one of the most recognizable brands, try a new hotel such as Novotel, Ibis, or a European chain. You’re likely to find a better value for your dollar, and you’re also going to get the experience of trying a hotel chain that you simply won’t find in the United States. You may even like it more!

Look for deals on places that you never thought you could afford. Lodging and traveling in Pacific Rim countries and in southeast Asia can actually be rather affordable, depending on the time of year that you are traveling. When you make your hotel reservations before leaving the United States, look into prices and amenities in resort areas. You may be surprised at what you can find, and even more surprised at the price tag! Will you forget the time that you stayed at a Thai resort?
