English has four cases. Russian has six. Hungarian has 18. Imagine trying to memorize 18 different forms of nouns and pronouns, and then learning to write with them. Not only that, but although Hungarian uses the Latin alphabet, with the addition of diacritical marks (accents), it consists of 44 letters, nearly twice as many as are in the English alphabet. It can take months to master Hungarian through books in an academic setting.

Hungarian is spoken in at least ten countries. In addition to being the official language of Hungary, many native speakers can be found in neighboring countries such as Serbia, Slovenia, Romania, but also as far away as Israel and the United States.

Recorded history of the Hungarian language dates back to approximately 1,000 BCE. At this time, it's thought Hungarian became a separate language from its origin languages.

Approximately 16 million people speak Hungarian worldwide.This includes about 10 million native speakers who live in Hungary, 4 million native speakers in other countries, and at least 2 million people who speak it as a second language.
