Why it's Important to Learn Romanian
Starting in the 2000s, Romania's economy became one of the fastest-growing in Europe. In 2004, the country became a member of NATO, and in 2007, of the European Union. Since that time, Romania's focus has been on strengthening its ties with the rest of the world.
Romania is an attractive location for foreign investment. One benefit companies enjoy is the 16% flat tax instituted by the government, which has helped to bring in several foreign corporations. If you work for one of these companies that has expanded into Romania, or any other countries where Romanian is spoken, you can benefit from learning Romanian, and gaining the ability to communicate with employees and local vendors.
Outside the political and financial realms, Romania has become a prime tourist destination in Europe. Tourism is becoming an increasingly important component of the country's economy, and Romania has a lot to offer. Mountains, skiing, and unspoiled landscapes invite naturalists and outdoors people from around the world. The stunning architecture of castles, monasteries, and city buildings affords tourists a look into Romania's rich history. Being able to communicate in Romanian can only enhance a vacation experience in this Eastern European gem.
Conversational Romanian vs. Academic Romanian
It is quite difficult to learn Romanian on your own just by reading, and it will take quite a long time to become conversational in a classroom setting. The Romanian alphabet has five more letters than the English alphabet, and some of them are made distinct by confusing diacritical marks, what some people refer to as "accents." Romanian also has seven vowels, and several specific pronunciation rules that are unlike any other Romance language.
Rather than taking months to learn a language from the ground up, you can jump right in with the Pimsleur Approach, and become conversational in Romanian in just a matter of days. By listening to the audio lessons spoken by native Romanian speakers, you'll learn how to pronounce common words and phrases correctly, without having to "decode" foreign letters and words. You don't have to worry about reading, doing any workbook exercises, or taking any tests. By simply listening, you'll be on your way to communicating in Romanian in a short amount of time.
A Logical Way to Learn Romanian
Only after 20 years of scientific research did Dr. Pimsleur hit upon the right method to teach language–by watching his own children. Children have the ability to pick up languages quickly and naturally. What makes Pimsleur courses so successful are the specific scientific principles that replicate the speed and ease at which children learn languages. Romanian Facts
Although it doesn't sound much like the other Romance languages, approximately 75% to 85% of Romanian words have Latin origins. In addition, about 38% of Romanian words can be traced to French or Italian. This is why if you already know one Romance language, Romanian is easier to learn.
The oldest example of written Romanian text is dated June 1521. It was a letter warning of an attack by the Turkish, and was written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which was used by Romanian until the late 18th century BCE.
Romanian is spoken in Moldova, but it's not called Romanian. Citizens of the Republic of Moldova refer to their language as Moldovan, and although it's the same language, there are some spelling variations between the two.
