French TV is often very good, with some excellent documentaries. People who do not live in Western Europe will probably not get the mainstream French channels but can rely on TV5, an international TV channel with programs from French, Canadian and Swiss television stations.

http://www.tv5.org/ Launched in 1984, TV5MONDE is the leading international French language channel broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without commercial interruption. Programming is provided by France, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada and French-speaking nations in Africa.
http://www.france24.com/en/ Launched on December 2006, FRANCE 24 is a 24/7 international news channel. Its mission is to cover international current events from a French perspective.
http://www.france2.fr/ France 2 is the biggest public channel in France. Its programming includes information, public debate and culture, as well as films and shows. Many of its programs are available on streaming for free.
http://www.france3.fr/ France 3 is part of the France Télévisions group along with France 2. It has a strong focus on culture, history, art and science. You can watch many of these programs via streaming.
http://www.france4.fr/ France 4 is the entertainment side of the France Télévisions group: music, shows, films, drama. Many of them are available online for free.
