Italian TV Channels

In Italy, just like in the U.S., you can find TV channels for news, sports, women's programs, home shopping, sitcoms, dramas, music, food, movies and more. Italian television is dominated by six main state-owned stations, and Italia 1, Canale 5 and Rete 4, which are privately owned.

National

  Rai 1, Rai 2 and Rai 3, the three main state-owned television channels are three of the six main television stations.

  Mediaset includes Canale 5, Italia 1 and Rete 4, the three main privately owned channels, and the other three of the main six television stations. All the main programming you would expect are on these six channels, including new movies and hot TV shows.

  Sky Italia, the Italian branch of Sky TV. You can watch all their programs live, or just record and view what you wish directly from the channel.

  La 7 is on-demand video, with access to many (mostly second-rate) shows.

  Odeon TV – known somewhat as the underdog in Italian TV. It's been around for a long time but has never been number one, although most Italians will know it. Every now and then a hit show is featured on it.

  A list of the most watched Italian videos on YouTube. Updated daily. This is a great source for keeping up with what's going on in the country.

  Comedy Central Italy. This is an American company, but its Italian branch shows only Italian comedy with original Italian material.

For Kids

  Boing is a television channel for children, with shows, cartoons and much more. Most cartoons are dubbed foreign shows.

  Shake is another station for children with cartoons and shows, available live or on-demand.

  A portal listing what children's programs will be featured on various channels (both public and private) around Italy. Perfect for parents who want to find family friendly shows to watch.

  Sky Bambini is a Sky Italia channel dedicated solely to children. Shows from Cartoon Network, Nickleodeon, Disney Junior and others can all be seen on Sky Bambini. Mostly cartoons and educational programs.

Music

  The video channel of RTL, one of the main music radio stations of Italy (see our list of radio stations).

  MTV Italia. Another branch of an American company which features solely Italian content and Italian deejays, although many of the songs are international.

  Deejay TV. This is the television station of one of the hippest radio stations in Italy. Used to only be a livecam of the deejays, but now competes with MTV Italia.

  As the name suggests, dance music. This is very popular with the younger crowd. The channel doesn't feature much besides constant music.

Sport

  This is Rai Sport, the Italian state television sports channel. It is one of the country's favorite sources for all that is soccer, but it shows quite a bit of the other popular sports (like hockey and motor racing).

  Privately owned sports channel, by the same company that owns Italia 1, Rete 4 and Canale 5. Emphasis is also on sports, although it features many more talks shows and concentrates more on soccer.

  This is a Sky channel dedicated entirely to soccer and competing directly with Sport Mediaset.

  Onda TV is dedicated entirely to sports. This is the video channel of the radio station Radio Onda, from Venice.

Cinema

  A channel dedicated entirely to upcoming movies. These are all advertisements for future movies, or movies soon to be shown on TV. All American movie previews are dubbed.

  The Sky movie channel. It features 400 exclusives per year, and is one of the only places to find foreign movies in the original language, since most of Italy shows their foreign movies dubbed.

Local TV Channels

  D1 Television currently plays in and around Napoli, with plans to extend to Sicily early in 2012.

  C6 is from Rome. The slogan is "Let's take back Italy." It is mostly news and tends to take an anti-government stance.

  TeleMilano. Straight from Milan, Piu Blu is a news channel dedicated to local and international news.
• http://www.primantenna.it/tv_online.html
  From Piemonte and Liguria, in the Northeast of the country. Primantenna features regional news and sports.

  This is the Tuscan TV station. Teletruria is great for local programs and news, with many of them available on demand.
